Each week our Joe Everett takes a look at the 5 top Team defenses to target on your free agent waiver wire, these are typically teams playing poor opponents. Also included in this report is IDP rankings and pickup suggestions:
5 Team Defenses to Target
1. NEW YORK JETS (vs LAR): [ 38% Owned ] The Rams are leading the league in fewest points scored at 130 through half their season, they are second just behind the Jets in most interceptions at 11 through eight games, they are Top-10 in sacks given up (20) and Los Angeles is allowing the seventh most fantasy points to opposing defenses on the year. The Jets are a dysfunctional bunch with both Sheldon Richardson and Muhammad Wilkerson missing meetings and garnering suspensions last week but they fortunately play well when they’re on the field. New York will produce in a low scoring affair and at just 38% owned, they represent tremendous value with four teams on the bye.
2. BALTIMORE RAVENS (vs CLE): [ 43% Owned ] Only the Colts have given up more sacks than the Browns at 26 and they have thrown the fifth most interceptions (9) thus far which makes Cleveland a Top-10 fantasy matchup. Baltimore only has 18 sacks on the year but seven of them come in the last two games and the Ravens are fresh off a beat down of divisional foe Pittsburgh, where they sacked Big Ben twice and scored a defensive touchdown. Up against a Browns team that just coughed up four sacks to the Cowboys last week and is only mustering a 29th ranked 18.7 points per game, the Ravens will make short work of a very limited offense at home in Baltimore here.
3. GREEN BAY PACKERS (@ TEN): [ 51% Owned ] Green Bay is only an average defensive unit, which is why they’re just 51% owned but they do have the eighth most sacks with 21 at the halfway point of their regular season and they just so happen to be playing a Tennessee team that is allowing the fifth most fantasy points to opposing defenses. The Titans are a basic run-heavy offense that is very mistake prone when forced to the air with the eighth most interceptions on the year at eight and they are also Top-10 in total turnovers committed at 13 thus far. The Packers are a very solid option for fantasy owners starting different teams week to week and streaming matchups.
4. CHICAGO BEARS (@ TBB): [ 2% Owned ] The Buccaneers have real firepower on offense with Jameis Winston and Mike Evans but the second year passer is still turning the ball over, as Winston is on pace to through 18 interceptions and he already has lost three fumbles through just eight games. Chicago has a superb matchup considering Tampa Bay is allowing the seventh most fantasy points to opposing defenses and with the rash of injuries the Bucs have at runningback, their offensive attack has become very predictable for teams to gameplan for. The Bears just posted five sacks against the Vikings and now they have a chance to repeat that against a terrible Tampa offensive squad.
5. WASHINGTON REDSKINS (vs MIN): [ 11% Owned ] Minnesota is having major issues with their offensive line and that’s why they’ve given up 21 sacks on the year, 13 of which have come in their last three games alone. The Vikings have only committed five turnovers on the year but four of them happened in one game (Philadelphia) and only five teams have scored fewer than Minnesota’s 155 points on the season. The Redskins are a very underrated fantasy defense with the seventh most sacks in the league at 22 on the year and they a have defensive touchdown to go along with the ninth most fumble recoveries (6) to make them a quality addition in deeper leagues.
